The basalt bedrock did not easily absorb water and retained heat well, providing ideal conditions for salt production.

It was a method of trapping seawater that came in with the tide in furrows and evaporating it with Jeju's strong sunlight and sea breeze, a method completely different from the tidal flat salt fields on the mainland. It was such a core means of livelihood for the village that there was a saying, "If you own a stone salt field, you can make a living," and there was even a custom of passing down a salt field area as a dowry to the eldest daughter.

Production ceased in the 1950s due to competition from cheaper salt from the mainland, but it took on its current form in 2009 through a restoration project by Jeju City. It is also one of the 31 hidden scenic spots in Jeju City.

It is open free of charge 24 hours a day, year-round, and is also known as a photo spot where water reflects off the basalt rocks at sunset.

Guem-ri Stone Salt Field (Salt Bille)

1229-5, Gueom-ri, Aewol-eup, Jeju-si, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province

How to get to Guem-ri Stone Salt Field
Take bus No. 202 from Jeju Intercity Bus Terminal → Get off at 'Gueom' stop.
