The wood is minimal 20~40 years High-quality oil can only be extracted if the tree grows fully. Since only about 60 kg of oil is produced from one ton of wood and the Indian government strictly regulates distribution, essential oils tend to be expensive and are widely used as fragrance oils. Trees grown for over 20 years are felled, and the heartwood and roots are harvested, ground into powder, and then steam-distilled to extract the oil. As mentioned above, products from the Mysore region in India are considered the best, but it is said that the quality of oil extracted from old trees is superior regardless of where they were grown. Trees can grow for up to 60 to 80 years. High-end oils with a Santalorene content exceeding 90% are classified separately as Agmark; therefore, when seeking the finest sandalwood oil, it is advisable to check for the Agmark type or oil originating from Mysore when purchasing.

Comparison of Sandalwood Varieties by Production Region

Mysore, India – Santalum album : In Mysore Santalum album We cultivate this variety and produce the highest quality oil. First, as sandalwood oil is a highly concentrated plant-based chemical, it must be diluted with a carrier oil or ethanol before direct skin contact. Additionally, the components Alpha-Santalol and Beta-Santalol can act as allergens for some sensitive individuals, potentially causing mild skin rashes or itching. If such a reaction occurs, discontinue use immediately, and if symptoms persist, it is advisable to consult a doctor. In particular, individuals with sensitive or dry skin are strongly advised to perform a patch test before use. A patch test involves applying a small amount of diluted oil to the inside of the arm and checking for a reaction for 24 hours.

Another precaution is that it is important to consult a doctor before use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is advisable to avoid unnecessary use of essential oils, especially during the early stages of pregnancy. Even when using them on young children, they should be diluted to a very low concentration because their skin is much thinner and more sensitive than that of adults, and even then, it is best to follow expert guidelines.

The aromatherapy effects of sandalwood

Sandalwood oil offers various benefits in aromatherapy.
